Messages in Light :: Cephalopod Intelligence

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 1, 2008, 1:42 PM
Squid and Octopi are some of the smartest creatures in the ocean, possibly the most observant and advanced in terms of eyesight and complexity of visual communication and display, and also some of the most "primitive" on our anthropocentric map of evolution. This is itself a paradox to our ongoing judgment of the living testament of nature, and our placement in it... because if primitive cuttlefish and squid and octopi can have powers of ocular and mental perception far surpassing our own, in a range of light and complexity far surpassing our own, then what ground do we have to consider ourselves superior, them inferior, or even to compare the two, apples and oranges, when they don't even exist in the same cart?

We're actually all in the same cart, but the cart is more like a fishtank... full of color...

Cephalopods, the group of mollusks that includes squid, octopi, and cuttlefish, almost all have some sort of chromatophoric change, meaning they change COLOR, like chameleons but far surpassing in mimicry, observation, and detail. Even the little squid that you eat as calamari possess these abilities, many of which include phosphorescence (glow-in-the-dark sparkles), speckles, and all sorts of interesting patterns. The deepest ocean trenches are not lightless abysses like is popularly thought, but rather full of dazzling displays of vibrance and light and color, largely due to these fascinating animals, plankton, copepods, angler fish, etc.

The gap-bridge is right there in that metaphor, actually - that the deepest, darkest, most matter-compact region that we can think of is actually, in temperature and scenery, most like outer space of anywhere on our planet. If these two polar opposites of existence can be so similar, and yet so different, then it is ludicrous to contrast ourselves with the cephalopod, the dolphin, the chameleon, or any living creature in this universe for that matter. The analogy is fair and certain, and echoed throughout the words of wisemen into antiquity: We are All One.

Believe it or not, humans have the capacity for luminous communication, just like the squid. We already do it, constantly - observation through the eyes, the emotions, the spirit and the Ear. Everything is connected - though the individual senses detect independent instances of vibration, different frequencies from "solid" matter (touch, heat/cold), smelling, hearing, sight (perception of light and shadow), on up to the etheric, spiritual senses in practice in certain individuals, the fact is these are all measurements and observations of the same continuous spectrum of vibration and information within vibration. The most "basic" of these senses many consider to be touch, but also included in this is the sense of heat, which is the sense of the actual vibration of molecules at certain frequencies *and* the actual infrared radiation - the same heat and vibration that one feels from the SUN, which is also the prime source of light. So our most "primitive" of senses is tuned to the same type of information as our most "advanced"!

Light is the bridge between all things, because all things are light. All things are vibration. We eat the animals, that eat the plants, that eat the light - we are eaters of light from the beginning, and producers of light in the end, and other living things - greater spiritual, temporal, emotional things like our planet - eat the etheric light that we emit in dreams and mind. Music, is Light, is rocks moving in the plates, is criss-crossing roots of a great tree, is waves combining in eddies.

The difference between man and squid, then, is in the focus of the various patterns within - different patterns for different species - but imagining the change of spectrum dependent upon the lens. If all these vibrations are available to us, then the physical movements that we are constantly reading in peoples' facial features, betrayals of their emotions, are also observations of the actual fabric of their emotions, the energies associated that they are giving off. One physical expression of a thing, within its expression, is also all the things and events and universal forces, the breaths of ages and the rivers of time, that went into creating that thing and placing that thing there for you to observe, then. When you see how many infinite messages are contained in even the observation of the tiniest pebble, you will begin to open to more messages, and more, and more. And that's when you start thinking like a squid. That's when you start to see the light-flashes and chromatic changes and energetic tentacles emanating off of your squid-companion, this other human being floating with you in the Sea of Life.
